HIST 119: Ethnic and Transnational Histories of the United States (HC) Spring 2025

Gilbert Bowles arrived in Japan in 1901, where he taught English at a Friends school. He was a founder of the Japan Peace Society. The Bowles moved to Hawaii in 1941, where they worked with Japanese Americans who had been forcibly removed and incarcerated. Materials related to post-World War II Licensed Agencies for Relief in Asia, specifically in the Philippines and Korea, are also included.

Rhoads was a teacher and principle at Friends School, Tokyo, before and after World War II. During World War II she worked with forcibly removed and incarcerated Japanese people in the United States. She also worked in Tunisia with refugees during the Algerian War.

Includes materials related to the fight against the Kinzua Dam in Western Pennsylvania, which would flood Seneca Nation land and displace Seneca families.

Civilian Public Service camps provided men with an alternative to traditional military service during World War II. These publications document camp life and thoughts on issues of the day by those working there. Men came from all over, including Puerto Rico.
