1) How can I use library resources when I am away from Haverford? Request resources from BMC and SC? Get resources not in Tripod?
See the Accessing Resources page in this guide for information and links.
2) I came across a journal article on the Web, but it costs money. Should I get it?
No. The library can supply the materials you need. First, check to see if the item is in our catalog. If not, Google the title to see if it is available on the Web. If not, request it through Article Delivery. The Interlibrary Loan Department, led by Rob Haley, is able to get digital copies of many articles without charges for students, faculty, and staff at Haverford.
3) How can I renew books?
You can renew many of the titles you have checked out through your Tripod account. Use the Sign In link (upper right-hand corner) to log in. Go to the Loans page to renew individual titles. If there is a problem renewing one, please send a message to illmail@haverford.edu. You will always receive an email message reminding you that a title is due soon. You can reply to that reminder to ask for a renewal.
4) Where can I find study spaces in the libraries?
Find unique places to study in the different libraries on campus. There is a loft with easy chairs in Lutnick Library and a two-story glassed atrium overlooking the duck pond in the Harris Music Library.
Carrells and group study rooms are reservable in Lutnick and the White Science Library. See details for reserving spaces through EMS (Event Management System) or on-site kiosks. This Lutnick Library map shows locations of quiet study tables, carrels, meeting rooms and other space options.
Use the Tripod catalog for your home institution This link opens in a new window This link opens in a new window to look for all books (print and digital) owned by your college as well as the print titles at the other two schools.
The following searches are a sampling of possibilities. To find materials on a topic, try doing a keyword search in the Tripod Catalog to find relevant materials and then use the subject headings assigned to those titles to find more books. Note that all these searches are in the Books+Media channel. In example #3 below, using keywords [Any Field] (rather than subjects) will pick up results from chapter titles and summary descriptions.
"computer science" AND research [Subject search] Sorted by newest books first
economics sociological aspects [Subject search] Sorted by newest books first
("climate change") [Any Field] AND (biology) [Subject] Sorted by newest titles first
(photography) [Subject] AND (vocation* OR career OR business) [Subjects] Sorted by relevance
** Try opening a search above and replace one of the topics with your research interest.
