How to Find Relevant Journal Articles

When you need scholarly journal articles on a topic, use a journal article database to find them.

It's important to remember that the quality of sources and your engagement with the articles matter more than the quantity of articles you find. Evaluation is a key step. Ask yourself: is the author of this article a political scientist (or a scholar from another field)? Is this article published by a scholarly journal? Which journal? (The journal title may be listed under "source" or "publication.")

Search Tips:

  • Use the * to search for variations on your search term. Example: constitution* will search for constitution, constitutional
Works in: Worldwide Political Science Abstracts, PAIS International, Proquest Political Science, Hein Online, and GenderWatch

  • Use double quotes "like this" to only search for a specific phrase. Example: "writ of certiorari"

  • Rather than entering keywords that you think describe the topic, try to think about which words would be included in a scholarly article written on your topic and use those as your search terms.
