Endnote: A How-To Guide

Creating an EndNote Account

The first time you use EndNote, you will need to set up an account. You must create your account either while you are using a campus computer, or if you are off-campus, by going through the proxy server. Your account will be valid for 12 months, at which time you are required to login again from an IP authenticated computer to re-establish your affiliation with the TriCo.

  • Go to http://www.myendnoteweb.com
  • Click "Sign Up". Fill out the brief User Registration form.
  • Install the add-ons below.
  • You are ready to use EndNote!

Cite While You Write (CWYW) Installers

Endnote will work seamlessly with Microsoft Word if you install the 'Cite While You Write (CWYW)' feature. On public computers, the CWYW feature is already installed as a Word tool on both PCs and Macs.

Installing CWYW on your Mac:

  1. Make sure you are logged into EndNote.
  2. Click the Download Installers link at the bottom of any page.
  3. Select the Download Macintosh link to download the Cite While You Write installation disk image. Save file.
  4. [Make sure no applications are running.]
  5. Select the .dmg file.
  6. Drag the EndNote CWYW folder to the Applications folder on your hard drive.
  7. Select the Applications folder, then the EndNote CWYW folder, and finally the ECWYW_installer file. Open.
  8. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.
  9. EndNote should then be the top choice under the Tools menu. You can also select its toolbar under ‘View’. [If EndNote X4 or X7 appears, follow instructions below.]

Installing CWYW on your PC:

  1. Make sure you are logged into EndNote.
  2. Click the Download Installers link at the bottom of any page.
  3. Select the Download Windows with IE plug-in link.
  4. Click the Run button (or Open, depending on your browser) when prompted in the 'Download Complete' window.
  5. To verify installation, open Word and look for the EndNote toolbar.  [If EndNote X4 or X7 appears, follow instructions below.]

If CWYW defaults to EndNote X4 or X7, instead of EndNote, do this:

  1. Go to EndNote tab in Word, and click Preferences in the Tools menu.
  2. Select the Applications Tab.
  3. Select EndNote online. Click OK.

Note: CWYW is not compatible with Pages for Mac or Google Docs.

Capture Reference Button

The Capture Reference button is especially good for adding web sites to your Endnote library. It will work on most browsers.

To install the Capture Reference button:

  1. Make sure you are logged into EndNote.
  2. Click the Download Installers link at the bottom of any page.
  3. Drag (or right-click) the Capture Reference button to your Bookmarks/Favorites bar.

To use the Capture Reference button:

  1. Browse to a citation or page you want to add to your Endnote Library, and click the Capture Reference button.
  2. The Capture Reference window will open. Add any information you would like to include in your citation.
  3. Scroll down and select the group where you would like to save the citation (or you can create a new group for it).
  4. Then select the Save to my.endnote.com button.

Firefox Extension

The Firefox extension will go onto your Firefox toolbar and will allow you to save online references directly into your EndNote library.
PLEASE NOTE: As of June, 2016, the Firefox extension is not working for Firefox version 43 and higher.

To install the EndNote extension for Firefox:

  1. Make sure you are logged into EndNote.
  2. Click the Download Installers link at the bottom of any page.
  3. Under Firefox Extension, click the Windows/Macintosh link.
Note: If Firefox prevents the download, click Options to add http://www.myendnoteweb.com as a trusted source.
  4. Click the Install Now button when prompted to confirm software installation.
  5. If prompted to confirm the publisher, select Run. This will launch the installation program.
  6. If prompted, select EndNote to import direct export files from data provider web sites.
  7. Click the Restart Firefox button.
