1952:
- The Pennsylvania Bureau of Correction is established. Graterford separates from Eastern State Penitentiary and becomes an independent institution with its own full-time warden.
1956:
- January: David "Slug" Myers replaces Charles Day as warden.
1957:
- July: "The Graterford Story" published in the Pottstown Mercury, highlighting educational and agricultural programs.
1959:
- Rev. Leonard Smalls becomes prison chaplain
- June 5: Two incarcerated men climb the 180-foot water tower; Myers refuses to retrieve them.
