"Hybrid" open access refers to individual articles that are published open access in a journal that is otherwise subscription-based for access. This is opposed to journals that are fully open access.
Because hybrid models of open access rely on the authors-pay model, hybrid publishing has been criticized for "double dipping", as they make money from the article processing charges and subscription costs. Some publishers credit back institutions that subscribe to hybrid journals based on the amount of open access articles published in that year.
Learn more about hybrid journals and double dipping.
Many journals with open access publishing models offset the costs of production by charging authors an "article processing charge" or APC. You may wish to include these anticipated costs in grant proposals or request funding from College or departmental research funds.
