Screening a film in the classroom for your enrolled students as part of a regularly scheduled course is permitted under US copyright law.

Campus Screenings

Screening a film outside of  a regularly scheduled class, and inviting the campus or community to attend, requires paying for a public performance license (PPR). You can obtain a public performance license by doing the following.

  • Students: Please see the "Film Screenings" information on the Event Planning Guide to find out how to obtain a PPR license for your club screening.
  • Faculty: The library may already own or be able to purchase the film with PPR included. Contact Media Librarian Arleen Zimmerle to inquire.
  • Library video
  • Video not owned by the library - Try contacting the following:
    • Swank College Campus handles licenses for many popular feature films.( Films licensed by the library from Swank are for classroom or individual viewing only, and do NOT include PPR.)
    • Janus Films handles licenses for many Criterion Collection films.
    • Contact the film's distributor or filmmaker to see if rights are available for screening.
