What is Open Access?

open access logoOpen access (OA) means making research and scholarship freely available to readers online, without subscription or paywall barriers. OA can increase your readership, citation impact, and public engagement.

There are different pathways to OA:

  • Diamond OA: Articles are published OA with no fees for authors or readers, usually funded by non-profit institutions or consortia.
  • Gold OA: Articles are published in fully OA journals, often with an Article Processing Charge (APC) fee.
  • Hybrid OA: Authors pay a fee to make an article OA in a subscription journal.
  • Green OA: Authors self-archive a version of their article in a repository (see the Self-Archiving page of this guide).

 What are OA publishing fees?

Open access publishing often involves fees to cover production and hosting costs. These include Article Processing Charges (APCs) for journal articles and Book Processing Charges (BPCs) for monographs. Haverford authors are encouraged to budget for these fees in grant proposals whenever possible.

Open publishing agreements

The Libraries maintain OA publishing agreements with many publishers that allow Haverford authors to publish OA for free or at a discount. See the Funding Opportunities page of this guide for detailed information on our agreements.
