History 111: Ruin and Renewal: Europe to 1500 (Graham) Fall 2023

Introduction

Special Collections and Lutnick Library have many resources for learning about the history of the book. Selected titles in this guide will be available for you to examine in a hands-on session with medieval and early printed books on December 1, 2023. Librarians will go over the special handling required of these materials, and you can explore the rich selection at your own pace.

To start things off, senior Ben Schiltz will talk about his thesis research into the thirteenth century manuscripts commissioned by Alfonso X, king of Castile, León and Galicia. Librarians will briefly introduce the ways in which medieval manuscripts and early printed books were produced and used.

Then you will examine books and manuscripts, keeping in mind the guiding questions distributed in class. Please discuss what you see with others. Prof. Graham, Ben and the librarians look forward to discussions and the issues you will raise.
