Pleasants lost two wives and a daughter during the time covered in these letters, and he discusses their health and deaths.

The manuscript recounts Mickle's illness with "tumorous pollypus" in the corner of her right eye and her nose. Her husband writes about the series of operations she underwent to remove the tumors, the re-emergence of the tumors after a number of operations, and the doctor's recommendation that they remove her right eye. The manuscript describes Mickle's decision not to undergo the operation to remove her eye, and recounts her final days, including visits from friends and family, and some quotes from Mickles last days, as well as a description of her final moments and death in 1809. The manuscript provides a detailed account of medical practice at the time, as well as the traditions surrounding death and dying.

Cicero was a Roman orator. This edition of his work on old age was published in Philadelphia in 1758.

Includes letters from the 1720s through the 1850s. Many deal with health and age issues.

This 1771 text includes "rules for diet, exercise, and physic for preserving a good constitution, and preventing disorders in a bad one."

Smith (1832-1911) lived in the Philadelphia area. Her letters cover a variety of topics including health and old age.

Entries focus on illnesses and deaths within the family, but also include religious reflections, descriptions of the weather, and visits with family and friends.
