Build a short bibliography in LyX by manually typing in each reference as in steps below.
Place your cursor where you want your References section to appear, and choose Bibliography in the Environment Box immediately below the File Menu.
A new References section appears.
You can now type your references manually, making sure you have the correct format specified by your professor. See the "Citation" Tab in this guide for some examples in the AMS format.
Next, insert the in-text citation. Place the cursor in the desired location in the text, then go to Insert menu --> Citation. Now match up the key to the reference.
When it's all done, use the View menu --> View PDF(LaTeX) to see the finished product before finalizing.
