HIST 257: Inventing Modern Science (HC): Relevant Books

History 257: Inventing Modern Science (Hayton) Spring 2018

Identifying Useful Books

Use Tripod to look for relevant books owned by Haverford, Swarthmore, and Bryn Mawr.

The following suggested subject searches are only a sampling of possibilities. To find materials on a topic not listed below, try doing a keyword search in the Tripod Library Catalog to find relevant titles and then using the subject headings assigned to those items to find more.

Beyond the Tri-College Collections

Literature Reviews

Literature reviews are a particularly useful kind of journal article when doing research. They address the issues involved in a particular question and the debates among scholars. They map out the intellectual terrain succinctly for a topic and give you the major landmarks in terms of key authors and significant titles for greater understanding.

Dissertations

Doctoral students go through an exhaustive literature search when writing their dissertations. They also tend to work on new questions, sometimes ones that have received very little attention from scholars before. You can read many of these dissertations full text and benefit from all the bibliographic treasues and new ideas. Check the database Dissertations and Theses (below) to identify dissertations on your topic.

If you find a dissertation there that does not have a full-text option, request it through the Interlibrary Loan page. Sometimes dissertations are not available to be borrowed.  If you run into that problem, get in touch with me.  I may be able to buy a copy for Magill Library.
