How to Find Books
To find books, search Tripod, the library catalog for the TriCo Libraries. You'll find links to books you can access online (e.g. in JSTOR and ProQuest), and you'll find listings for books with print copies at the libraries.
How to find (physical) books at the libraries:
For books located at Swarthmore, you have two options:
Request it:
Sign in to Tripod to place the request. The book will be pulled from the shelves for you and held at the front desk in the library.
You'll get an email when you're book is ready. It usually takes a day or so.
Find it yourself in the library shelves:
Look at the Tripod listing for your book.
In the Get It section, you'll see a Call Number for the book. (For example: McCabe Library Stacks HQ77.9 .S77 2017.)
This code tells you which floor and shelf the book is on. The system can be confusing at first, but you'll learn how it works! You can always ask for help at the library front desk.
In McCabe, call numbers starting with letters A-E are on the Lower Level. Letters F-K are on the 2nd Level. Letters L-Z are on the 3rd Level. So in the example, call number HQ77.9 .S77 2017 starts with the letters HQ, so this book will be on the 2nd Level of McCabe.
Once you've found the book, bring it to the front desk to check it out.
For books at Bryn Mawr and Haverford, you can request delivery through Tripod:
You can have books from Bryn Mawr and Haverford delivered to Swarthmore.
Look at the Tripod listing for your book. Sign in to Tripod. To place the request, click "Request a physical copy."
Your book will be delivered to Swarthmore within a day or two. You'll get an email when it arrives.
Why read book reviews?
For a few reasons:
Academic book reviews usually offer both a short summary and a critical analysis of the book.
Reviews often situate the book within the context of what other scholars have written on the topic.
By searching for book reviews on a topic, you may discover relevant books you hadn't heard about before.
