Search through digitized issues of the following newspapers, among others:
• Chicago Tribune‎ • Los Angeles Times‎ • The New York Times‎ • New York Tribune‎ • Philadelphia Inquirer • The Wall Street Journal‎ • The Washington Post‎ • major African American newspapers including the Philadelphia Tribune, New York Amsterdam News, Baltimore Afro-American, and Los Angeles Sentinel

How to find articles

1. Start by searching for "welfare rights"–include the quotation marks. This will show you articles that have those two words right next to each other.


2. Once you have results, find the Publication Date limit (left side of screen). Choose Enter a date range. Enter 1960–1970, then click Update.


3. Now use the Publication Title limit to see articles from the New York Amsterdam News. Choose More to open the list. Find New York Amsterdam News, check the left box (Include), then hit Apply.


4. Try using the Document Type limit to see only certain kinds of stories, like Front Page / Cover stories or Letters to the Editor.

Find articles published in major US magazines, including: Life Magazine, The Nation, The National Review, The New Republic, Time Magazine, Bloomberg Businessweek, Forbes, Fortune Magazine, The Atlantic Magazine, U.S. News & World Report Magazine, Ebony Magazine

Some options for finding articles

• Here's a search for magazine articles mentioning New York - replace "New York" with your keywords.


• Here's a search for magazine articles with the phrase "on strike," published between 1960-1970.


• Here's a search for articles mentioning activist George Wiley or welfare rights, published between 1960-70.

Compare what you find:

• These keywords will find articles matching any of these phrases: "welfare rights" OR "wiley, george" OR "george wiley"


• Versus these keywords, which will find articles that match both "welfare rights" and either New York or Ann Arbor: "welfare rights" AND ("New York" OR "Ann Arbor")
