HLTH 320: Biopolitics: The Governance of Life and Death

Health Studies 320: Biopolitics: The Governance of Life and Death (Droney)

Example

Here's the true story of how I approached choosing a topic for a research paper in this class:

  1. I looked at your syllabus for ideas and the phrase 'Cultural Imperialism" in one article jumped out at me. That got me thinking about how does the media contribute to the concept of cultural imperialism.

  2. I wasn't sure if that quite fit the concept of Global Media, so I turned my attention to how people are represented

  3. I did some initial searching in Google Scholar, and I settled on: How does the media representation of cultures contribute to Cultural Imperialism?

Brainstorm Search Words

Who is considered "superior" in terms of Media Topics

Step 1: Break up this research question into its main concepts. Ignore extraneous words.

  • Concept #1: Culture
  • Concept #2: Imperialism
  • Concept #3: Media or Global Media

Step 3: Using information from your initial searches, add synonyms, acronyms, and variant spellings.

  • Concept #1: Culture, Nation, Race
  • Concept #2: Colonizing, Superiority, Dominating
  • Concept #3: News, Headlines, Articles

Understand Boolean Operators

  • Even if the search engine you are using doesn't require you to enter boolean operators, it is still using them behind the scenes. It will help you to know the logic behind your search
    .
  • AND gives you results that include ALL of your concepts.

  • OR gives you results that include ANY of your concepts.
  • Essentially, you are searching:

(citizenship) AND (united states OR "U.S.") AND ("worthy" OR unworthy OR deserving OR undeserving)
