Best Practices for Online Identity Management

Best Practices

(From the Penn State Berks Digital Privacy Workshop Series)

  • Conduct a risk-benefit analysis of using a particular technology.

  • Read Terms of Service and Privacy Policies.

  • Customize privacy settings.

  • Avoid storing personal info in browsers (passwords, credit card info, etc.).

  • Secure access to accounts and devices using strong passwords and two-factor authentication. Biometric security methods (like fingerprint and eye scanning) are becoming the gold standard.

  • Install software updates to maintain security features.

  • If you’re no longer benefiting from a tech, delete your account and/or uninstall it.
  • Protect your phone number! It's the new social security number, and hackers can use it for identity theft, to bypass two-factor authentication, and for smishing.
