ORCID iDs at Swarthmore

ORCID: connecting research and researchers

What is ORCID?

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a community-based non-profit organization whose work is interoperable and open. ORCID will never sell or profit from your data, and ORCID iDs will always be free to use. An iD uniquely identifies you as a researcher and connects together all of your publications and grants.

Why sign up?

Your ORCID iD:

  • Uniquely identifies you, even if your affiliation or name changes
  • Streamlines submission for grants + publications
  • Integrates with systems like SciENcv and Pivot
  • Makes it easier for others to discover and read your work
  • Gives you control in how your information is displayed

There are over 112 publishers and 20 funders who require or strongly encourage ORCID iDs upon submission, including Cambridge University Press, SAGE, Springer Nature, Wiley, NIH, Wellcome Trust, and NSF.

To get started, log into My NCBI, and click the link under SciENcv to create a new one.

Click "Edit" next to "My Profile," which will launch a pop-up window prompting you to edit your personal information. Add your first and last names and click "Select here to link your ORCiD iD."

A modal window titled "Edit My Profile" is open, prompting the user to input personal information including First Name, Last Name, Name Displayed As (with an example suggesting "Jean Doe, PhD"), Title / Department, and Organization / Institution. Below the form fields are two links to link an ORCID ID and an NSF ID. At the bottom right are two buttons: "CANCEL" and "SAVE".

You will be prompted to sign into ORCiD and authorize NCBI to access the information within your profile. For more information, refer to SciENcv: Integrating with ORCID [Video: 3m 42s].
