Companions and handbooks are very helpful kinds of sources. They are edited by leading scholars in the particular areas of research, and those editors commission authors to write individual essays on the subjects which are their fields of interest. As a result, students get a much better understanding of the issues involved in a specific subject area, since the authors go beyond factual summaries to analyze differing arguments in the field.
You can find many of the companions and handbooks for classics in the Tri-Colleges from the four links below. In the cases of Tripod search results, you can add a further word or words to the search to focus your results.
Example: "blackwell companions to the ancient world" AND (sex* OR gender* OR erotic*) [in any field]
For a complete listing of handbook titles, see these links from the publishers. Check Tripod then for availability in the TriColleges.
