The Literature Review

What is a Literature Review?

A literature review is an account of what has been published on a topic by accredited scholars and researchers.

A good literature review:

  •  gives a critical examination of existing literature in a certain subject area
  •  provides an original synthesis of previous work
  •  identifies critical gaps of knowledge and points to disagreement within a subject area
  •  leads to new ways of looking at a topic
  • transforms a network of articles into a coherent view of the literature
  • allows a student or scholar to integrate and synthesize information on a topic and use it to create new knowledge
