Authors: Doug Starn et al. (2007)
On each page of the book is a segment of Black Pulse 3, an original artwork 12 feet high. The Starns scanned a leaf and then digitally manipulated it to display a circulatory network in which the light absorbed by the leaf is indicated by black. The book uses an accordion design to form a linear circulatory system where beginning and end merge. A poem by the Starns runs across the top of the pages and explains the Starn's philosophy, in which trees and humans are intertwined, in which black is a symbol of light, not darkness, and in which the pulse, the divine spark, pumps life through leaves and lungs.
