EALC 225: Chinese Fiction in the Twentieth Century (BMC): Surveys and Background Materials

A comprehensive up to date two volume history. Bibliographies for the different chapters appear at the end of each volume. Unfortunately there are no footnotes. The online version can be accessed at Bryn Mawr. Published in 2010 it is the most recent history.

Sections are by genre (poetry, drama etc.). Within the sections it is usually arranged chronologically. Does not have footnotes. Check page 1105 for the topics covered in the bibliography. Published in 2001.

This 'concise' history is actually over 1000 pages. What distinguishes it is that it is by a scholar in China.

There are two volumes. The second volume is a supplement to the previously published first volume. The first volume was published in 1986, the second volume was published in 1998. Both volumes have entries on individual writers. The first volume begins with ten essays on different literary genres.

Covers 1900 to the present. Useful features are the chronology, the dictionary entries, and the bibliography. Not that the bibliography has two major sections. The first section starting on page 297 lists primary works by authors (in both Chinese and in translation). The second section starting on page 411 lists "Critical works on individual authors".

The section on China begins on page 287. Has essays on genres, themes, and individual writers.

History that covers the 1950s through the 1990s. An interesting feature is the "Chronology of Contemporary Literature in China" that starts on page 451.

Survey of literature from 1949 to 2000.

Consists of four volumes. One each on: poetry, novels, short stories, and drama.
