Wikimedia Commons is a media file repository making available public domain and freely-licensed educational media content (images, sound and video clips) to everyone, in their own language. It acts as a common repository for the various projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, but you do not need to belong to one of those projects to use media hosted here. Currently include more than 13,000,000 files.

Its purposes include offering permanent access for researchers, historians, scholars, people with disabilities, and the general public to historical collections that exist in digital format.

The Prelinger Archives online include a few thousand of the 60,00 "ephemeral" (advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur) films from the Prelinger Archive held at the Library of Congress. Fantastic source for mid-twentieth century ephemera.

A quick search of the library collection will show a number of sound effects and recordings you may access from CDs.

This is a broad multimedia collection. In addition to its numerous videos, the Internet Archive also hosts an interesting variety of music, audio interviews, and sound effects.
