Screening Films on Campus (HC)

Haverford College

Public Performance Rights

Public Performance Rights (PPR) are granted to copyright holders to control how their copyrighted works are used in public spaces. Screening a film outside of a regularly scheduled class, and inviting the campus or community to attend, requires paying for  Public Performance Rights.

COSTS

PPR fees vary widely depending on the rights-holder and distributor.

  • Swank Motion Pictures: $400 to $650.

    • Swank sells streaming licenses*and PPR for most recent mainstream movies. Click here to search their Digital Campus catalog.

    • Click here to contact Swank about purchasing PPR for an event.

  • Kanopy Films: $150 when available.

    • Some (but not all!) titles distributed by Kanopy Films include PPR with the streaming license fee.*

    • Click here to learn how to tell which Kanopy titles include PPR.

  • Academic Video Online (AVON): No charge. Films in the AVON database include public performance rights, as long as no admission is being charged.

*PPR differs from streaming rights, which are usually purchased without PPR included. The Library has many streaming films available for free to the Haverford community for private or classroom viewing. Remember to check Tripod to see if we already have the film and rights you're looking for!

Planning a Public Film Screening?

Students: Please see the Student Engagement Resources & Guides on Event Planning & Promotion and Budget & Purchasing

Staff and faculty: Please see the Administrative Auxiliary Services Guides on Event Scheduling & Room Reservations and Event Promotion.

  • Factor PPR costs into your budget early on!

  • Check Tripod to see if the Library already owns the film you want to screen, either streaming or on DVD.

  • If a PPR license is needed, request it from the rights-holder at least two weeks before the date of your event.

  • If you'd like the Library to purchase a title for our film collection, a faculty member or or librarian must request it through standard ordering procedures.

  • Contact Ellen Garrison (egarrison@haverford.edu) with any questions about streaming or PPR licenses for a film screening that is not part of a course curriculum
