Search Tips

  • News outlets will often refer to people by their last name and first initial, or last name and title. When searching for articles about an individual, start by searching by last name and narrow your search results from there.
  • Names will not always be spelled correctly in historical newspapers. "Garrett" may become Garet, Garret, Garette, etc. Try running multiple searches and comparing results.
  • Use date filters to limit the timeframe of your search. Many of the databases included in this guide include multiple decades worth of newspapers. If you know approximately the timeframe you're interested in, narrow your search parameters to reflect it.
  • Narrow your search to specific newspapers or locations. Some of the databases included here cover broad geographic regions. This can be combined with date filters to focus your results.
