Haverford College Student Literary Publications

The Amaranth and Ruby was a hand-written magazine from 1840. The magazine contains fictional prose and was published semi-monthly (or whenever was convenient).
Dates: ca. 1840

The Comet was a student literary publication containing essays, short stories, and poems. Several of the issues note that it was published by individuals with the initials "J.D.F.", "C.W.F." and "S.G.H." It is probable that these were Haverford students Joseph D. Folwell, Charles William Fisher and Stephen Grellet Hinsdale.

The Compass was a literary magazine from 1835, containing essays about seasons, student adventures, and more.

The Excelsior was a publication created by the Lyceum, a literary society that hosted discussions and readings, founded in 1853. Contents include hand-written poetry and prose on topics such as slavery in the United States, a Jewish legend, Robin Hood, and female influence.

The Havefordian was a long-standing student literary publication founded in the spring of 1879. The Haverfordian published monthly until 1941, over sixty years since its inception. This was the College’s first regularly published literary magazine that eventually became an integral part of student life and creative work.

The Index was a monthly publication issued by Haverford College Grammar School, now the Haverford School. It includes reports of school events, descriptions of athletics, and essays on a variety of topics (many historical) by students.

The Planet was a handwritten magazine published by the Penn Literary Society of Haverford College.

Scarlet and Black was a humor magazine from 1881. Issues contain humorous poetry and short stories.

Senior Comics were a collection of comics published by the Haverford classes of 1892 and 1893 upon their graduation. They include written and visual jokes.
