This book utilizes the largest database ever assembled on a slave population in the Americas to reconstruct and analyse the unique history of slave labour in Minas Gerais. This population was remarkable in its ability to diversify economically as well as in increasing through natural reproduction, rather than through importation via the trans-atlantic slave trade. Minas Gerais invites comparison with the patterns of enslavement found in the United States' South, heretofore considered unique.

The author shows why sugar planters needed the help of repressive governments for recruiting disciplined labor. Demonstrating that island-to- island variations on this theme were a function of geography, local political economy, and relation to outside powers, he scrutinizes Caribbean slavery and emancipation in a world-historical context. Even after emancipation, freedom was not a clear-cut matter with the planter class often gaining more certain forms of social control.
