William Shakespeare in Haverford Special Collections (HC)

Shakespeare related materials held in Haverford's Special Collections department.

Introduction

One of the major strengths of Special Collections at Haverford is its early Shakespeare publications. Many of these were originally the donations of William Pyle Philips, class of 1902. Philips's interest in Shakespeare was sparked by his courses at Haverford with professor Francis B. Gummere, and this interest continued throughout his life. Many Shakespeare materials have been added to the collection in the intervening years, and they form an important aspect of our rare books collection.

Those wishing to learn more about the history of some of our Shakespeare materials may also wish to consult an online exhibit produced in honor of the Bard's 450th birthday in 2014.

This guide is not meant to be comprehensive, and more information can be found by contacting the special collections librarians, who are always glad to assist with research, at hc-special@haverford.edu. Anyone is welcome to use the materials mentioned in this guide in our Reading Room.
