Definition: Case Study

A case study is an in-depth analysis of a unit—a person, group, institution, community or culture—generally over an extended time period. Often the tool of social scientists and medical researchers, a case study may be used in various other fields, such as business or education. The method accumulates and analyzes several case histories in order to form general principles. This may involve extensive interviews with the major participants, or direct observations of how a community or organization operates and how its members interact.
