Locating Primary Source Material

Primary sources, accounts and other kinds of documents written at the time of an event or era, allow a nuanced and detailed understanding of historical issues.  Sources can take many different forms.  See the subpages for anthologies, government publications, newspapers, online databases and rare material in Haverford's Special Collections.

Primary texts have been edited and reprinted in facsimiles.  Many of them will be listed in Tripod or WorldCat under subject terms along with a word or phrase indicating that it is a primary text.  Look for terms including:  Sources, Correspondence, Personal Narratives or Diaries.

Examples below give an idea of the breadth of authors available and the topics that they treated.
