ENVS 203: Environmental Humanities (HC) Spring 2025

Environmental Studies 203: Environmental Humanities (Gauthier)

Example #1

You can approach environmental justice from a variety of perspectives--including those from the humanities, social sciences, and hard sciences.

Let's say you want to find literature on environmental justice from a psychology perspective; specically:

You're interested in the role of environmental activism in emotional healing, particularly for those communities most affected by environmental trauma.

Step 1: Break up this idea into two or three main concepts. Ignore extraneous words.

  • Concept #1: environmental activism
  • Concept #2: emotional healing

Step 2: Conduct an initial search with these words, and quickly scan the results

Step 3: Using information from your initial search, add synonyms, acronyms, and variant spellings.

  • Concept #1: environmental activism, environmental justice
  • Concept #2: emotional healing, environmental psychology

Know the Logic Behind Your Search

  • AND gives you results that include ALL of the words connected by the word 'AND'
  • OR gives you results that include ANY of the words connected by the word 'OR'.
  • Essentially you are searching:
("environmental activism" OR "environmental justice"AND ("emotional healing" OR "environmental psychology")

Example #2

You want to write about environmental justice in a way that leverages psychological principles.

"science communication" AND "environmental psychology"
