Art 039: Contemporary Japanese Visual Culture - Sakomura - Fall 2014

Starting points

Research tips for ART 039

This guide will help you find scholarly articles, books, and more.  The resources linked here are related to your course, but many of the suggestions will work for other classes and projects.

1. Visit your librarian!

Librarians are available to help you build your research skills throughout your time at Swarthmore. Please don't hesitate to contact me about an appointment or send questions via email (selichk1).

2. Don't just type keywords into a search box - find the scholarly conversation.

Scholars build on one another's work. You can trace these relationships by seeing who an author cites, and who cites them.

3. Expand your reach beyond McCabe - Bryn Mawr and Haverford have lots of great books on Japanese art.

You might also find good books and journal articles that we don't have access to in the TriCo. Request those through EZBorrow, Interlibrary Loan, or Article Delivery.

  • Book: Find books on topics using Worldcat. Double-check Tripod to make sure we don't own it. Request a copy through EZBorrow (if not available, use ILL).
  • Journal Articles:  Try searching Google Scholar for the article title, then click Find It @ Swarthmore to see if we have it. If not, place an Article Delivery request to get a PDF by email.
